Known Bugs

1. Occasionally parts of the chat transcript will show though an open ‘Places to Chatsum’ drawer. Due to the inconsistent placement and dimensions of these artefacts we believe this to be a bug in Firefox’s rendering engine.

2. The Ctrl-Alt-C shortcut sometimes fails to toggle the Chatsum sidebar (Note: this appears to be a Firefox bug, at least on Mac OS. If you experience this bug try clicking on the Firefox window and pressing Ctrl-Alt-C again. If it still doesn’t work please let us know).

3. OS X Firefox in some cases refuses to install the extension. We’ve had reports of the url not loading or of the extension appearing in the Extensions window and then disappearing. Any more reports from people having trouble installing would be great as we haven’t been able to recreate this in the lab.

It logged me out straight away and wouldn’t let me log back in. 5. Google maps could be also a good thing to include in the user profile. Like FON S.A

  6. User subretoothed was inexplicably unable to see/get to the green “control panel” in the right column. I sent him the url to the profile edit page, but he received a 401 unauthorized. He’s on XP, running Firefox 1.5.0.3, cookies and javascript both enabled. It seemed a peculiar bug, since he was able to chat in the sidebar fine, so I thought I’d mention it here.

  8. I just discovered that if you put 127.0.0.1 (localhost) into the address bar, it links up to other people who are also visiting their own website, i reacon this is a bug as it will never be the same website, and most of the time the user will not have a website at thsi addresss, i mostly think of this as a bug as it comes up in ‘Places to Chatsum’..

anyway just thought u should know

  9. I’m not sure if you have a “suggestions” form hiding somewhere, so I’ll just list them here:

    - In regards to #8 above, it’s a cool feature that shouldn’t be removed. I thought the same thing, but I like being able to chat in the aether of the web.

    - A “I’m looking at the page, but not here/commenting” option would be good in case someone is trying to get someone else’s attention.

    - Being able to right click on the chat dialog box. I’m guessing, though, that this has more to do with Fx and not CS.

  10. So bugs 1, 2 and 3 should now be fixed, 7 cancels out 6, we agree with point 1 of comment 9 which cancels out 8 which leaves 4, 5 and points two and three of 9. Still with me?

These remaining points are all really feature requests not bugs and we will consider all suggestions. As and when we get a chance to work on any new features, we’ll add them to the Current Road Map page so you know what we’re working on.

Thanks for all your good work!

  14. Profile & browsing history problems + 1 suggestion:

I’ve just tried to change a few items on my profile via the edit profile menu. I tried to change avatar, personal details, selecting show most viewed pages, first name, age location amongst others - with no success. I’ve tried doing each change individually and together with no success.

I also have tried to delete my browsing history and was queried as to if I really wanted to - ticked the box and then reloaded my profile page - no change was made.

I’ve cleared my cache repeatedly with no success either.

Any ideas as to what to do?

A suggestion - I know this is currently in beta and the devs have plenty to do but perhaps a forum and/or FAQ might be useful.

I should say I only joined yesterday so sorry if I come across a newbie!

  15. In regards to http://www.chatsum.com/members/list/all

Some users, such as -Paolo-, who was an alpha/beta tester, joined on 20th of January 2006 (according to their user page), which also shows his last comments being 132 days ago. Anyway, on the page that lists the users, it says that they were last seen 13301 days ago.

Is this the result of people not logging in recently? User 2gether joined 24th of May 2006, but is also listed as being seen last 13301 days ago.

Take that for what you will, but there seems to be a math error or something for the alpha/beta testers and (possibly) people who haven’t logged in a second time (or something like that… I don’t know how you guys are handling that.)

  21. Chatsum’s sidebar requires Javascript to be enabled. I have a Javascript whitelisting Firefox extension that allows only domains approved by me to shoot Javascript at me.

I can’t figure out what domain the Chatsum sidebar page is coming from. Anyone mind enlightening me?

    Comment by Stephen — June 5, 2006 @ 10:14 pm

  22. Me again! So, Number 19. why can you chat when looking at a file?

Why not? If you can look at it in your browser we think you should be able to chat about it. Maybe one day you’ll be looking at a particular file and see that someone else left a comment there 3 years ago. That kind of thing gets me hot.

Number 20. There is something freaky about Firefox, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Until Firefox becomes a little more predictable, changing the shortcut may just produce the same problem.

Number 21. It’s chat.chatsum.com for anyone else struggling with this - I know Stephen got his problem fixed by another helpful Chatsum user. Thank you whoever you are.

  23. As of late, whenever I close out of Firefox and open it back up, if I left Chatsum open, I have to close the sidebar and re-open it in order to get the chat window or the Places area to be visible.

    Comment by SeanEtCetera — June 8, 2006 @ 3:24 pm

  24. “Most Active” and “Recent Comments” don’t seem to be updating right now. I’ve checked the sidebar on the site, and “Places to Chatsum” and neither are updating.

Oh, and I think the “All Time Most Visited Sites” broken too. How come it shows I’ve visited Google 70 times under Weekly, but 24 under All Time? And why does All Time show sites I’ve only visited twice when I’ve visited sites like StumbleUpon 60+?

Oh yeah, and I think the RSS is screwed up too. It lists http://www.chatsum.com 3 times with 3 different visit numbers on each, but the title and favicon are the same.

Sorry if you’ve mentioned any of this before >.>

    Comment by NightHawk — June 9, 2006 @ 1:47 am

  25. Nevermind, I lied. “Most Active” and “Recent Comments” works. I should probably get some sleep before I screw something really important up. (How ironic for my username)

The visited sites thing and RSS is still screwy though. (Unless somehow I’m imagining that too.)

    Comment by NightHawk — June 9, 2006 @ 2:01 am

  26. Hi Sean, NightHawk. Well done for noticing the change to the most active and recent comments sections in the drawer - we’ve started caching these now and they were set to quite a slow update speed. We’ve decreased that now so they’re a bit more responsive.

I’ll get Lee to take a look at the code that generates the Most Visited stats and RSS feeds.

As for your problem Sean, is it still happening? Sounds like an issue with your browser but not sure what it could be - Firefox sketchiness again? Let me know if it’s still happening.

    Comment by George — June 13, 2006 @ 9:31 am

  27. Hey NightHawk, just finished fixing the RSS and stats generation - hopefully it’s all working properly now. Let us know if you find anymore bugs.

    Comment by George — June 13, 2006 @ 10:44 am

  28. Oh whew, so it wasn’t just me seeing things on the Most Active and Recent Comments part? I was afraid I was going crazy there for a sec.

As for the RSS and the stats: looks like they work fine now. It wasn’t anything important but I’m glad you and Lee got them fixed.

    Comment by NightHawk — June 13, 2006 @ 2:45 pm

  29. I always get the “Please load a page to chat about” error message when I try to send a message, although a page is loaded. Any ideas what’s going wrong?

    Cheers,
    Simon

    Comment by Simon Wacker — June 22, 2006 @ 12:53 pm

  30. It seems that the new version of Flash (9.0 r16) breaks the Chatsum sidebar.

The effect is about the same as disabling JavaScript and opening the sidebar — there’s no text at the top at all, not even to ask you to load a page. However, you can still lock the page and swap between site and page chat. You even get the “Please load a page to chat about” message if you try to send a message. The Places to Chatsum doesn’t work either.

I’d take a gamble that that’s the reason Simon can’t chat and that deleting NPSWF32.dll from \plugins\ will fix it.

    Comment by NightHawk — July 12, 2006 @ 2:05 am

  31. That is [Firefox install folder]\plugins\.

(C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\ being the default on Windows.)

    Comment by EmbersWillBurn — July 13, 2006 @ 3:44 pm

  33. Hi Embers, that’s exactly what another user experienced and then solved by reinstalling Firefox. We couldn’t work out what was going wrong but a reinstall did fix it. If you can give that a go and let us know how you got on that would be great.

I’ll look into the Flash issue and see if that’s it.

    Comment by George — July 17, 2006 @ 3:32 pm

  34. OK folks, it is Flash 9 and it’s not what I immediately thought it would be. For now I’ve just disabled the Flash movie so Chatsum will work just without sound. I’ll post again here when I’ve got things back how they were.

Did you click ‘Edit Options…’ and allow chatsum.com to install software as outlined here:

    http://www.chatsum.com/install/firefox

If that didn’t work, you can download the extension from this link and open it from your hard disk (like it’s a file) to get around the security warning.

  42. Hi sweetdis,

Your previous comments are attributed to ‘Anonymous’ when you click the ‘Clear History’ button under your profile settings. It’s a way for people to separate their profile from their previous browsing history and comments in case the have privacy concerns. I’m guessing you clicked that button whilst trying to get Chatsum working again?
